HIROOKA NAOTO: THE GOD OF GOTHIC FASHION

Hirooka Naoto is one of Japan’s well-known fashion designers that have integrated a unique, creative style into his fashion, utilizing what was once an underground hit among the Japanese community, which is the popular fusion of Gothic and Lolita styles into everyday clothing brands.

'Hirooka Naoto'

The style that Naoto created is inspired by the Goth-Lolita fashion and has been highly influenced in many of his designs in Japan since the mid-1990s. The Goth-Lolita fashion is derived from visual-kei bands, which is known as a movement among Japanese musicians. The movement is characterized by the use of heavy make-up, elaborate hair styles and flamboyant costumes, and various manga characters influences. The widely-known Harajuku fashion shows organized by the designer have made his sensational style gain more attention and appeal in the fashion world.

'One of Naoto’s famous fashion show'

While most Goth-Lolita fashion is best described by its use of cute and playful style, Hirooka Naoto has become known for pushing past these general identities and bringing forward a more edgy punk-rock fashion and sex appeal style of Victorian fashion.

Naoto’s creations are extremely popular with musicians and artists all over the world. He has created dresses and costumes for many celebrities and musicians, amongst those are the bands Ayabie, Psycho le Cému, S.K.I.N., and Hangry & Angry.

In recent years, Hirooka Naoto’s work has reached international acclaim as he has worked with many famous singers that are into the Goth and rock fashion such as Amy Lee of Evanescence. He helped to design a dress for the singer that she wore for the 2004 Grammy Awards. Amy Lee designed her own Grammy gown and then chose the Japanese designer to execute it. Amy has a recognizable fashion style, marked by her frequent use of Gothic make-up and taste for Victorian-styled clothing.

“I call it my ‘princess corpse’ dress,” says the singer.

The two found each other when Amy wore Naoto’s merchandise for a magazine cover shoot in Tokyo earlier this year.

“Marilyn Manson popped into one of my store once,” says Naoto, adding another name to his list of celebrity customers, many of whom wear his designs in private, not just on stage.

He has also worked with GACKT, a Japanese musician, producing costumes for his concert tours and a unique design for Gackt’s guitar. Most recently, Naoto has worked with Luna Sea guitarist, Sugizo, and famed Japan producer, Yoshiki to produce prints and other fashion wear.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE GOTH LOOK?

'Before and After makeover'
MAKEUP
What you need?
  • Foundation
  • White powder
  •  Eyeliner
  •  Purple eye shadow (or any bright colors will do)
  • Red lipstick
  •  Blusher

How to apply?

  1. A white face should create the illusion that you really are that pale: Try using a foundation just one or two shades lighter than your own color, and then put white powder over it.
  2.  Do something crazy with your eye makeup: Apply purple eye shadow on the eyes to give a supernatural or haunted look.
  3. On the subject of eyeliner, use a black liquid eyeliner: A dark, thick lining to your eyes will make them stand out.
  4. Find a shade of lipstick not everyone else is wearing: Use a blood red shade for that 'bloody vampire lips' effect.

HAIRSTYLE
What you need?
  •  Hair straightener
  • Colored clip-on wigs

How to apply?
  1. A good starting point would be shoulder-length black hair. Sleek, shinning straight hair is perfect on most goths.
  2. From scarlett red to electric blue, goths dye their hair or wear shocking wigs to complete their look. The colored clip-on wig is sure to impress all the other darklings or goth enthusiasts.

DRESS-UP
What you need?
  •    Short lace dress
  •    Black Blazer
  •    Black high-cut boots
  •     Fishnet hand stockings
  •     Rocker necklace

I-SOCKS: A GOTH HAVEN

'Welcome to I-Socks'
A fan of gothic style? Get yourself into I-SOCKS, a store that offers you a varied range of goth clothing fashion. I had the chance to meet the owner of I-Socks and not surprisingly, he himself looked like a goth person.

I-Socks is located in Times Square at the the 4th floor. There are 5 branches itself on the 4th floor. The five stores are divided into different categories:
  • One store - only sells men clothes
  • Another three stores - consist of women clothes
  • The final store - sells accessories

'I-Socks: Men clothes'
I got myself first into the men store. The entrance of the store itself gave me a creepy feeling as the signage of the store was designed with scary-looking cob webs. The store sold mostly party clothes with scary masks and ties. Even the shoes were weird-looking.

'The staff'
Even the staff were wearing eccentric gothic fashion. They communicated with me as though they had no feelings (well, most of them because some were actually friendly). Basically, the store totally brought the goth vibe to any customers who walks into it.

'I-Socks: Women clothes'
However, the stores that sold women clothes were visualized in a bit more colorful way, as they sold many different clothing styles like military, hip hop and punk rock. Even the staff said that they would match their goth fashion with clothes that comes from other genres.

The final store sold gothic accessories - it's just a small store that consists of dark and interesting accessories that will surely catch your attention.

I-Socks truly offers us a wide range of varieties when it comes to gothic fashion. All goth lovers should really give the stores a try as they will never be disappointed and as for those who are not interested, they should also have a look at it. The stores are just mind-blowing. And, who knows, it might just give you an interest in goth, just like how it triggered an interest in me towards goth fashion.

STREET STYLE: THE GOTH FASHION

‘Grunge goth with a twist’
RARA AZMAN, 23 is a sales promoter at I-Socks store. According to her, her look is original and it's not a copycat of another. Rara’s big nerdy specs was bought at Deeper and Harder, the fur jacket is from her mother’s wardrobe, while the flare skirt and pink belt is from the I-Socks store itself. The eye-catching pink belt complimented her whole outfit pretty well.

‘An everyday goth’
AISYAH MALIK, 18 is also a sales promoter at I-Socks store. Aisyah’s black pants is from FOS and the printed t-shirt is from Topshop. See how she effortlessly wears the printed t-shirt while still maintains the goth look. The black pearl necklace and black bracelet is her sister’s, which she bought in Bangkok. Her slippers from Crocs give a sense of ‘I don’t care’ vibe to her goth look.

‘Amy Lee (Evanescence) meets simplicity’
HANAH SERENA, 20 is a professional baking student at Food Institute of Malaysia. Hanah's top is from Sungei Wang, the skinny jean is from Forever 21, and she purchased her high-cut boots from an online boutique. I love how she paired up her all-black outfit with her brother's skull tie and a fishnet hand stocking on her right hand. Lastly, her heavy ‘smokey eye’ make-up adds a nice touch to her overall look.

‘A cross between Elegant and Goth’
FARAH RABIYA, 20 is studying tourism at UITM Shah Alam. Farah’s black and white dress is from Forever 21, the black blazer is from a bazaar at Curve and her shoes are from Cotton On. I particularly love how she rocks her look with that rocker necklace of hers, which she bought at Time Square. This accessory is the perfect example of why the necklace should always be an essential piece in a goth's wardrobe.
